Our litte village video by Chris Graham shows you a bit about the nearest town close to the Whale Resort – Puerto Jimenez. It will also introduce you to it’s surrounding areas. It’s a great introduction to a very undiscovered part of our beautiful country Costa Rica. Enjoy the video.
The Whale Resort – Location
The whale resort is located on the Osa Peninsula, and backs up to the Golfo Dulce (Sweet Gulf) Bay. At The Whale Resort you’ll experience your own private jungle. Your backyard are the beach and the pool. Most mornings the monkeys show up, lounging in the trees waiting for breakfast looking for an occasional banana or two. Always have your camera ready because you never know what you might see next! The whale resort is located on a beach called Playa Juanito Mora, which is tucked away on the Golfo Dulce Bay. The water in the Gulf is always warm and calm. It is thus a very relaxing beach and always safe for swimming for the whole family. You may see an occasional fisherman, or a local walking along the beach, but you’ll have the beach to yourself most of the time. You’ll have the beach all to yourself to do whatever you prefer, bask in the sun, exercise, or practice yoga or meditation.
Whales in the Gulf
One of the world’s most interesting phenomena occur in the “Sweet Gulf”: The Humpback Whales take a three month journey from the northern hemisphere heading to the Golfo Dulce, where they seek refuge from the Orca Whale, which is the only natural predator to the baby Humpbacks. The Golfo Dulce which means “sweet water” has an unusually large amount of fresh water rivers flowing into it, making it too toxic for the Orca, but biologically suitable for the Humpbacks. Between July and Oct. and again from January to April, hundreds of the Humpbacks have been instinctively traveling to this bay for centuries to have their babies. It’s an amazing destination for whale watching enthusiasts from all over the world to come and witness this incredible and unique experience.
The Whale Resort is a large beachfront property located on the edge of Canaza, a small town about 15 minutes from Puerto Jimenez. Puerto Jimenez is a much larger port town that offers all the amenities such as restaurants, bars, banks/ATMs, pharmacies, medical facilities, tour operators, airport, and grocery stores. Canaza also has its own small grocery and liquor store about five minutes from our resort. Puerto Jimenez offers some very excellent sport fishing and is the hub of some very successful boats and captains.
Matapalo is just a short drive away where you can enjoy some of the best surfing on earth.
